FAQ: Beginners Woodblock  - Workshop for Two people

What is this workshop about?
This express session introduces you and a partner to the art of woodblock printmaking. Over two hours you’ll learn essential techniques and create your own prints from start to finish.

The workshop also introduces specialised approaches such as mosaic printing in black and white and colour, using a 12cm square block to explore the dynamics of repetitive mark-making, and reduction woodblock printing, where the same block is carved in two or three stages and printed from light to dark while chiselling as you go.

What will I learn?
Together you’ll explore chisel handling and carving shortcuts, positive and negative space design, relief printing and inking techniques, using the press and registration basics, reduction printing methods, and the essentials of print studio etiquette and care.

Do I need any experience?
No prior experience is needed. The session is perfect for beginners as well as those looking to refresh their skills.

What materials are provided?
Everything you need is included: chisels, inks, rollers, paper, newsprint, custom woodblocks, and use of the press.

What should I bring?
Just wear an old shirt or apron (things can get inky!).

What if we don’t have an idea?
That’s no problem. Inspiration often comes during the process, and I’ll help guide you through design options.

What kind of inks are used?
We use water-based inks, which are easy to clean up and environmentally friendly.

How much does it cost?
$200 total for a two-person session.

When can I book?
Sessions are flexible and can be booked at times that suit you:

Monday to Thursday: 10am – 9pm

Friday to Sunday: 10:30am – 5pm
If you need another time, just ask and I’ll do my best to accommodate.

Where is it held?
Sheyne Tuffery Visual Art Studio
@Toi Pōneke Art Centre , 61/69 Abel Smith Street, Te Aro, Wellington

Will we take something home?
Yes! You’ll both leave with 8 to 12 finished A3-sized woodblock prints, along with the skills and confidence to continue creating on your own.
