FAQ: Silhouette Woodblock Workshop — Two People

Part 2 — for those with prior experience
This workshop is designed as a progression from the Introduction to Woodblock Intensive, or for anyone who already has some basic printmaking experience.

In this 2-hour session, you’ll dive into the bold and striking art of silhouette woodblock printing. Working with organic imagery and shapes, you’ll print in black and white or colour, and experiment with layering silhouettes over textured or patterned backgrounds to create dynamic, multi-layered artworks.

What will I learn?
You’ll learn how to:

Design and carve simple yet powerful silhouette images

Transfer your designs onto a woodblock

Print with both single-colour and multi-colour techniques

Use layering and inking methods to create contrast, depth, and interaction between silhouette and background

Do I need experience?
Yes. This workshop is intended as a “Part 2” progression. It’s best for people who have completed the Introduction to Woodblock Intensive, or who have some basic printmaking knowledge.

What materials are provided?
Everything you need is supplied: chisels, inks, rollers, paper, newsprint, custom woodblocks, and use of the press.

What should I bring?

An apron or old shirt

Optional: some simple silhouette ideas (leaves, birds, shells, or flowing organic shapes work beautifully)

What if I don’t have an idea?
No problem! I’ll provide inspiration, examples, and guidance so you can develop your shapes during the session.

What kind of inks are used?
We use water-based inks — safe, easy to clean, and environmentally friendly.

How much does it cost?

$150 for a private two-hour session

$200 total for two people (friends or couples)

When can I book?
Sessions run Monday–Thursday from 10am–9pm, and Friday–Sunday from 10:30am–5pm. If you’d like a different time, let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate.

Where is it held?
Sheyne Tuffery Visual Art Studio
Toi Pōneke Arts Centre
61/69 Abel Smith Street, Te Aro, Wellington

Will I take something home?
Yes! You’ll leave with 8–12 finished A3-sized woodblock prints, along with the skills and confidence to keep developing your woodblock practice.
