FAQ: Silhouette Woodblock Intensive — One Person

Part 2 — best suited for those who’ve completed the Introduction workshop or have prior experience

What is this workshop about?
This one-on-one intensive introduces you to the bold and expressive art of silhouette woodblock printing. Over two hours you’ll create organic-shaped silhouettes that can be printed in black and white or colour, and layered over textured background prints to build dynamic, multi-layered compositions.

What will I learn?
You’ll learn how to design and carve silhouette images, transfer them onto a woodblock, and experiment with both monochrome and colour printing. We’ll also cover how to layer your silhouettes over abstract or patterned backgrounds, adding depth, movement, and contrast to your prints.

Do I need any experience?
Yes — this workshop is best suited for people who have already completed the Introduction to Woodblock Intensive, or who have some basic printmaking experience. It’s designed as a “Part 2” progression to deepen your skills.

What materials are provided?
All materials are included: chisels, inks, rollers, paper, newsprint, custom woodblocks, and access to the press.

What should I bring?
Just a pencil and an old shirt or apron. If you’d like, bring a few simple silhouette ideas — natural shapes such as leaves, birds, or flowing forms work especially well.

What if I don’t have an idea?
That’s no problem. Inspiration often comes during the process, and I’ll guide you through ideas and design choices.

What kind of inks are used?
We use water-based inks, which are safe, easy to clean up, and environmentally friendly.

How much does it cost?
$150 for a private two-hour intensive session.

When can I book?
You can book a time that suits you:

Monday to Thursday: 10am – 9pm

Friday to Sunday: 10:30am – 5pm
If you need another time, just ask and I’ll do my best to accommodate.

Where is it held?
Sheyne Tuffery Visual Art Studio
Toi Pōneke, 61/69 Abel Smith Street, Te Aro, Wellington

Will I take something home?
Yes! You’ll leave with 8 to 12 finished A3-sized woodblock prints — and the skills to keep creating on your own.
